In the words of Alex Ovechkin, “It’s good to be Ovie.”
But as I found out Saturday, it’s also good to be Mike Green.
As we mentioned here last week, Green’s condo and recently acquired 2006 pearl-white Lamborghini Gallardo will be featured on MTV’s “Cribs” in an upcoming episode. The filming was done by a seven-person crew over the course of about five hours, and I got to watch them in action thanks to an invitation from Green and his business manager, Sherif Abdalla.
While MTV was finishing up, I spoke Green for a few minutes about his offseason and snapped some pictures of his dream bachelor pad. We’ll publish a much bigger story on the record-setting defenseman during training camp, but here are a few tidbits (and some photos) to tide you over until then.
Although Green was dogged in the playoffs by a bum shoulder, he said the injury doesn’t figure to be a problem this season because of a rigorous rehabbing regimen — and some help from an unexpected source.
“My shoulder gave me problems all summer working out, and then I started swimming,” he said. “And swimming cured it.”
Green passed the first big test for his shoulder when he survived Canada’s Olympic orientation camp late last month. But while the shoulder wasn’t a problem, he did experience some hip tightness and a slight groin pull during the camp. He said he doesn’t envision either becoming an issue when Washington’s camp begins next week, though I’m thinking this might bear watching.
Green also said he focused on his conditioning this summer, working out daily with Calgary-based Crash Conditioning. He has slimmed down to a svelte 200 pounds, which the Caps’ ice time leader — he skates 30 minutes some nights — considers to be close to his optimal playing weight. The 23-year-old added that his personal trainers are going to visit him once a month to ensure he maintains his fitness over the course of a grueling year.
But enough about hockey for now. Because Saturday wasn’t really about that. It was about Mike showing off his penthouse and customized cars to MTV.
“When I first signed a contract and bought my first painting, things just sort of rolled from there,” Green said of his interest in art, interior design and fashion. “I always cared about what I was wearing and what I wanted to have for myself. And this all stems from my ideas, and now it’s all a reality.”
