Mike Green Awaits his Winter Olympic Fate

122909_Green-tabThe Caps definitely have four players headed to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February. Star forwards Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin and rookie
goalie Semyon Varlamov will play for Russia – along with former Caps Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov, who both spent the previous two seasons in Washington. Nicklas Backstrom was named to Team Sweden on Sunday and will play a major role for the defending Olympic champions. It also seems like forward Tomas Fleischmann (14 goals) is a mortal lock for the Czech Republic squad when that roster is finalized on Wednesday. That will give Washington five Olympians in all.

But what about No. 6? The last player waiting on pins and needles right now is defenseman Mike Green, who would be a lock if his last name was Sandstrom or Kozlov or Koivu or Mueller. Alas, he grew up in the hockey-player factory that is Canada. And while Green is definitely still in the mix for one of Team Canada’s final spots it will be close. After answering Olympic questions for months, Green’s about done speculating on his fate. So what do his teammates think of his chances when the final roster is announced on Wednesday at noon?

Boudreau supports Green’s Games aspirations

Canwest News Service

2461828217_d16065ac50Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau doesn’t try to hide the fact his best defenceman Mike Green wants desperately to be part of Team Canada when the Olympics begin here in Vancouver.

There’s no quiet agenda going on, it’s pretty much open and Green is the same way. He doesn’t want to seem to be lobbying for a position, but he’s pretty clear that he thinks he can play low-risk hockey if that’s what the Canadian coaching staff is ultimately going to want from him.

And let’s be clear. With Jacques Lemaire and Ken Hitchcock affecting any advice Mike Babcock might be giving executive director Steve Yzerman and his co-GMs, Kevin Lowe and Ken Holland, with respect to picking the team, high risk is apt to be frowned upon.

“Mike can be as low-risk as you like, but why would we [the Caps] want to play that way?” said Boudreau. “I understand they didn’t have any problems with him at the orientation camp. I ask him to be more offensive with our team, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play any way you like.

Eager Green on bubble for Canada

A ticket to Vancouver would leave Capitals defenceman overjoyed

Mike Green is a bubble boy, in terms of his chances of being named to the Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team roster.

So the question was simple: what would it mean to him if executive Steve Yzerman selects him to play at the 2010 Vancouver Games? “It would be the happiest day of my life,” the dynamic Washington Capitals defenceman said.

584-GreenAnd if Green could have an audience with Yzerman, what would the candidate say to his potential boss? “That I care more than anyone else,” Green replied.

There is little doubt that Green cares. Ask any teammate or official associated with the Capitals on which player takes losses the hardest and the answer is easy, “Mike Green.”

If Green is not selected for the Canadian team, he will no doubt take the snub hard. But he shouldn’t. There is room for only a few offensive defencemen and despite his statistics, Green is no shoo-in. So if the likes of Chris Pronger, Shea Weber, Jay Bouwmeester and Duncan Keith, Robyn Regehr and Drew Doughty are in the mix as the team’s two-way blue-liners, Scott Niedermayer, Dan Boyle, Dion Phaneuf and Green are trying to make the Canadian roster as production providers from the back end.

Defenseman to appear on ‘MTV Cribs’ episode

Capitals defenseman Mike Green has officially made the leap. No, he hasn’t reached the cultural heights of teammate Alex Ovechkin. A public appearance by Green will draw a crowd, not a mob scene.

But he is young — still just 23 for a few more days — with an interest in cars, design, fashion and music. He is also one of the NHL’s elite scoring defensemen with 31 goals last season and 73 points. And it is that flair — both on and off the ice — that makes him a popular figure in areas far beyond Washington, D.C.

Earlier this month, Green even filmed an episode of “MTV Cribs,” a program that has shown off the lavish lifestyles of athletes and entertainers for almost a decade. Only two other hockey players have ever appeared on the show.

As a fan of “Cribs,” MTV’s chronicle of lifestyles of the gluttonous and varying-degrees-of-famous,Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green(notes) jumped at the chance to have his luxury condo documented on video — even if he chose not to indulge in the show’s legendary clichés.

Did he stock the fridge with bottles of Cristal? “No, no … I was myself,” he said.

Ah, but what about the ultimate accoutrement for young, male stars on the show through the years: The household stripper pole?

“Well, that was already in the plans long before ‘Cribs,’” he said, deadpan.
