Green embraces celeb status on and off ice

Defenseman to appear on ‘MTV Cribs’ episode

Capitals defenseman Mike Green has officially made the leap. No, he hasn’t reached the cultural heights of teammate Alex Ovechkin. A public appearance by Green will draw a crowd, not a mob scene.

But he is young — still just 23 for a few more days — with an interest in cars, design, fashion and music. He is also one of the NHL’s elite scoring defensemen with 31 goals last season and 73 points. And it is that flair — both on and off the ice — that makes him a popular figure in areas far beyond Washington, D.C.

Earlier this month, Green even filmed an episode of “MTV Cribs,” a program that has shown off the lavish lifestyles of athletes and entertainers for almost a decade. Only two other hockey players have ever appeared on the show.

The reeducation of Mike Green, Celebrity and defenseman

As a fan of “Cribs,” MTV’s chronicle of lifestyles of the gluttonous and varying-degrees-of-famous,Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green(notes) jumped at the chance to have his luxury condo documented on video — even if he chose not to indulge in the show’s legendary clichés.

Did he stock the fridge with bottles of Cristal? “No, no … I was myself,” he said.

Ah, but what about the ultimate accoutrement for young, male stars on the show through the years: The household stripper pole?

“Well, that was already in the plans long before ‘Cribs,’” he said, deadpan.

My Blog

mike-green

Hi fans,

I have been back in D.C. for about 10 days now and am ready for the season. I trained really hard in the off-season and am ready for a great year. We have big goals as a team this year, but everyone believes we can achieve them and is ready to start playing again.

I love being back home in Calgary, but coming back to D.C. reminds me how neat this city is. There is always something going on it has been a crazy 10 days so far. As you know, MTV was at the condo to shoot my crib. I have also been to a Nats game and did an appearance at PNC Bank downtown. Of course I went to The Source for a good meal as well. That is one of my favorite spots and you have to check it out for sure. The team had media day last week, which was a long and fun day. We signed a ton of jerseys and sticks, filled out some questionnaires, answered a lot of questions from the media and posed for different Comcast video shoots. I was back at Kettler last night for the team’s game-opening video shoot. I was there with Ovi, Backie and Sasha for about two hours. I hope it comes out well and they make us look good!

Our schedule has been just as busy on the ice. We had physicals earlier this week and then started camp. The speed has been really good and it has been competitive. All the boys are really getting after it. You should come out and watch us this week. There was a scrimmage yesterday, one today and one tomorrow as well. Special props to anyone that brings a GreenLife52 sign. We play at Buffalo on Thursday, but I’m not sure if I’m going on that trip or not. We find out later this week who’s playing in that game.

That’s it for now. I have to go get ready for SneakerBall tonight. A bunch of guys are going and I have a special pair of kicks to wear.

One last thing, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter, @GreenLife52. I’m still getting used to the whole Tweet thing, but I’m liking it so far.

It’s Good to be Mike Green

elbashir_611

In the words of Alex Ovechkin, “It’s good to be Ovie.”

But as I found out Saturday, it’s also good to be Mike Green.

As we mentioned here last week, Green’s condo and recently acquired 2006 pearl-white Lamborghini Gallardo will be featured on MTV’s “Cribs” in an upcoming episode. The filming was done by a seven-person crew over the course of about five hours, and I got to watch them in action thanks to an invitation from Green and his business manager, Sherif Abdalla.
